Great Chelsea Fire (first) occurs.

Sparks from a fire at the Boston Blacking Company start a fire that burns nearly 500 acres of Chelsea, kills 19 [50] people, leaves some 14,000 [17,000] homeless, and destroys some 1,500 buildings people, and causes an estimated $20 million in damage. Many of the Jewish residents displaced move to the Boston neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury, and Mattapan. Another major fire occurs in Chelsea in 1973.*
